Over a Century
of Wonder.
From an engineering marvel on the Coney Island Boardwalk to an official New York City landmark, discover the extraordinary history of Deno's Wonder Wheel.
Built in 1920.
Unlike Anything Before It.
Invented by Charles Hermann and constructed in 1920 by the Eccentric Ferris Wheel Company, the Wonder Wheel was built using Bethlehem steel on the Coney Island beach.
Originally known as the "Dip-the-Dip," the attraction was designed to combine the excitement of a Ferris wheel, a scenic railway, and Chute-the-Chutes.
Standing 150 feet tall and weighing approximately 200 tons, the Wonder Wheel quickly became one of the most recognizable sights along the Coney Island skyline.
More than a century later, its distinctive design remains an unforgettable part of New York City history.
What Makes the Wonder Wheel Unique?
The Wonder Wheel isn't an ordinary Ferris wheel. Its distinctive design delivers two different riding experiences.
16 Swinging Cars
These cars travel along curved tracks within the Wheel, sliding toward and away from the center as the Wheel turns. It's the experience that made the attraction famous.
8 Stationary Cars
Prefer a traditional Ferris wheel experience? The stationary cars stay fixed to the outer rim as the Wheel rotates, offering sweeping views of Coney Island.
144 Riders
With 24 passenger cars that each accommodate up to six people, the Wonder Wheel has a total ride capacity of 144 passengers.
